Here the composer intends the answer to be "derby", with "hat" the definition, "could be" the anagram indicator, and "be dry" the anagram fodder. He may attempt to mislead by employing a form of words which can be taken in more than one way, and it is your fault if you take it the wrong way, but it is his fault if you can't logically take it the right way.Īn example of a clue which cannot logically be taken the right way: The Book of the Crossword lays this injunction upon him: "You need not mean what you say, but you must say what you mean." This is a superior way of saying that he can't have it both ways. ![]() We must expect the composer to play tricks, but we shall insist that he play fair. The basic principle of fairness was set out by Listener setter Afrit (Alistair Ferguson Ritchie) in his book Armchair Crosswords (1946), wherein he credits it to the fictional Book of the Crossword: Torquemada's puzzles were extremely obscure and difficult, and later setters reacted against this tendency by developing a standard for fair clues, ones that can be solved, at least in principle, by deduction, without needing leaps of faith or insights into the setter's thought processes. Composer Stephen Sondheim, a lover of puzzles, is credited with introducing cryptic crosswords to American audiences, through a series of puzzles he created for New York magazine in 19. Puzzles appeared in The Listener from 1930, but this was a weekly magazine rather than a newspaper, and the puzzles were much harder than the newspaper ones, though again they took a while to become entirely cryptic. In some papers this took until about 1960. These newspaper puzzles were almost entirely non-cryptic at first and gradually used more cryptic clues, until the fully cryptic puzzle as known today became widespread. Crosswords were gradually taken up by other newspapers, appearing in the Daily Telegraph from 1925, The Manchester Guardian from 1929 and The Times from 1930. The first newspaper crosswords appeared in the Sunday and Daily Express from about 1924. Torquemada (Edward Powys Mathers), who set for The Saturday Westminster from 1925 and for The Observer from 1926 until his death in 1939, was the first setter to use cryptic clues exclusively and is often credited as the inventor of the cryptic crossword. The first British crossword puzzles appeared around 1923 and were purely definitional, but from the mid-1920s they began to include cryptic material: not cryptic clues in the modern sense, but anagrams, classical allusions, incomplete quotations, and other references and wordplay. standard) crosswords, and sometimes two sets of clues are given for a single puzzle grid.Ĭryptic crossword puzzles come in two main types: the basic cryptic in which each clue answer is entered into the diagram normally, and "themed" or "variety" cryptics, in which some or all of the answers must be altered before entering, usually in accordance with a hidden pattern or rule which must be discovered by the solver.Ĭryptic crosswords originated in the UK. Particularly in the UK, a distinction may be made between cryptics and "quick" (i.e. Compilers of cryptic crosswords are commonly called "setters" in the UK and "constructors" in the US. ![]() Cryptic crosswords are particularly popular in the United Kingdom, where they originated, as well as Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, and in several Commonwealth nations, including Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malta, New Zealand, and South Africa. A 15x15 lattice-style grid is common for cryptic crosswordsĪ cryptic crossword is a crossword puzzle in which each clue is a word puzzle. ![]() It’s hard to gauge why construction of a certain building ceased, so fixing situations like that is a chore. Another kind of large issue is a lack of feedback. It’s one part of the entire experience that feels incomplete, which is frustrating because playing a crazy world dominator is the best part of this type of game. The characters have no animation, and all you really do is just watch to see whose number of troops depletes first. Combat is kind of lacking and not engaging. That aspect of the game is definitely the most interesting, but after that, there’s less polish. Each research point actually makes a difference in your town, and it makes your decisions mean something. There are multiple research trees that affect your town’s output, military units, or build options. Each area of the map is rich in different materials that can be harnessed and sold (one could have an abundance of honey and fish, whereas another is close to an area where you can mine), so keeping track of things like that and ensuring that you trade with places that actually need these goods is important as well. Supply and demand is in effect and if there is too much market saturation, your traders will charge less for goods. Economics is the name of the game here, so setting up trade routes, new towns, and ensuring your towns have a variety of different goods to offer is important. Regardless, the objective is to build a financial powerhouse. The issue is probably a lot more solvable with a more precise mouse instead of a thumbstick, but I can’t speak to the validity of that argument without playing the PC version of the game. ![]() In the more fulfilling free play mode, I could build multiple units and separate them as I saw fit. I managed to do it by accident a few times, but I never really figured it out. ![]() There was no way I could separate the two. When I would call upon my settlers, I would have issues actually getting them out instead of the building crew. Part of this is because my units menu lumped builders (who are mainly used to make roads) and settlers (who are only used to create towns) together under the same hub. For whatever reason, in the story mode, I could not properly settle a town without it taking far too long, even if that was my only objective. Even little annoyances I had during the campaign seemed to go away by switching modes. Maybe having my chains broken allowed me to experiment more without my town’s entire economy dropping into a recession like Stephen Harper was in power, but there was something liberating about the open world aspect of the game. I actually had more issues playing through the campaign than when I was left to my own devices. To be honest, it’s not very memorable, but it acts as more of a tutorial for the free play mode. There is a single player mode with a story involving the son of an imperial guard who is pushed to an overseer role for a new empress after his father is promoted. ![]() Photo Challenge-Welcome Travelers by Astyrrean Photo Challenge-Fear the wolves by crystal Photo Challenge-Majestic Garden by carrotalliance Photo Challenge-Convenient Storage by fabian Photo Challenge-Here be Dead by ivanat0r Photo Challenge-A place to Worship by gibrel Photo Challenge-The Center of Attention by Nasse Photo Challenge-Masterful Workshop by Megurum Photo Challenge-Library Showcase by Potential_Heretic Photo Challenge-The Beauty of Autumn by scar Photo Challenge-Hammer Time by sxl Photo Challenge-Perfect Trap by Mappagi Photo Challenge-Clay Brick Amazingness by Energy Photo Challenge-Winter has Come by Wolfess Photo Challenge-Foggy Situation by Lady Kathleen Photo Challenge-Beware the Hunter by ScarletBunny Photo Challenge-Look at these Variations by Blackfish Photo Challenge-Garden 2.The whole premise of the game, much like Civilization, is to build a sustainable empire. ![]() If Bethany couldn’t make it back to her own seat when the lights were on, she certainly couldn’t do it when the lights were off. We see the scene on the plane (flashback within a flashback) from a new angle, since Autumn’s seat was at the back of the plane. Instead, she became one of the missing 11 passengers.ĭuring the initial post-landing interrogations, Autumn tells Vance about the turbulence. There’s an odd little twist in the opening flashback, which is meant to introduce us to the passenger of the week, Autumn Cox, a con artist who was detained at the airport because of outstanding warrants, but who never made it before a judge. I’m going to call it now: Danny is The Major. But she had something done to everyone on that plane, in order to activate their latent telepathic abilities, and she had herself shielded from it. It’s still not clear how or if that’s connected to the telepathy or if they’re two separate events. ![]() I don’t know if she’s behind the time jump. This photo is from when the voltage on Marko was turned up to 80%, on the mysterious Major’s order, and EVERY PASSENGER, ALL OVER THE CITY, FELT IT- BUT FIONA WASN’T AFFECTED AT ALL. Or, she just helped DARPA steal the experiments from the CIA, because DARPA offered her better terms. She intends to continue her work on her own terms, completely off the radar. Either she was working with the Singularity Project or she was working for another government faction (DARPA), but took advantage of Ben and Vance’s raid on the secret experimental site to screw the government agencies over and kidnap the test subjects. I believe that Fiona has been playing the other passengers from the beginning. Did she grab a big stack of the paperwork that was still in the lab? Yes. Did she tell Ben she’d text him the location of the safe house? No. She probably isn’t as outraged about the way her research is being used as she should be, if Saanvi’s reaction to Autumn’s injuries is anything to go by.Īnd she’s very, very willing to take sole responsibility for 10 fugitives who have been declared dead or missing, are severely injured, have no other friends or relatives to miss them, and who have developed psychic abilities from experiments based on her work.ĭid she ask Saanvi to meet them at the safe house to provide medical care for the passengers? No. ![]() If she wants to, she can provide safe houses, and probably many other resources, for the passengers. She doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty. We learned a lot in this episode, especially about Fiona Clarke. There were a few minutes where that looked entirely possible, but then Grace calmed down. I’d like to thank the Angel of the Waters for that. There were real and metaphorical deaths, though it wasn’t a Walking Dead or Game of Thrones style bloodbath. Well, the Fall Finale of Manifest certainly lived up to its name, Dead Reckoning. In 2021, they were the 14th most popular dog in the United States, according to the American Kennel Club. Boxers were used during wartime as messenger dogs and were one of the first to be employed in the country as police dogs. Shortly after 1940, they were the most popular dog in the United States. How Popular Are Boxers in the United States?īoxers first arrived in the United States after the First World War and quickly gained popularity. Those that aren’t are popular companion pets. When the practice was outlawed in Europe in the mid-19th century, Boxers became herding dogs – helping butchers herd cattle in their shops.īoxers are powerful animals and have been used as war dogs, police dogs, as well as in dog sporting events – some still are today. These dogs would then run until either they were killed or the bull collapsed from exhaustion. Descended from the now-extinct Bullenbeiser (bull-baiting) breeds, crossed with a variety of Mastiffs, Bulldogs, and Terriers, the Boxer was originally bred to be a bull-baiting dog.īull-baiting was a blood sport in Germany in the 19th century, where bulldogs, mastiffs, and other small, muscular dogs would be set loose in a field with an angry bull – watched by the public, it was considered ‘entertainment’ at the time. The Boxer was bred in Germany in the 19th century. The Boxer Corgi mix could also have been a result of accidental breeding. ![]() However, we suspect that it came about in the 1990s or early 2000s, when a crossbreeding craze swept the United States – by this time, both the Welsh Corgi and Boxer were well-established breeds. You can expect your Boxer Corgi mix to inherit the facial features of the Corgi – upright ears are common among this mix, including a smaller, wedge-shaped face (as opposed to the Boxer’s rounded face). It will be a medium-sized dog but likely have a longer body, like the Corgi. The body of the Boxer Corgi will likely resemble the Boxer’s sturdy frame, muscular chest, and powerful hindquarters. And yet every reader knows that something almost mystical transpires when the right reader finds the right story. Unfortunately, "What is the point of a storybook?" is actually a really difficult question to answer because, at the end of the day, stories are largely frivolous: They don't fill an empty belly or suture a wound or shelter the lost. I took very seriously the mission to explore the importance and function of literature (especially fiction) in a way that went beyond trite, bookish platitudes. The biggest challenge ended up being exactly the thing you mentioned at the start of your question: the theme of books. I went through a lot of pain and agony to create that (totally false) impression! A fun reading experience was a major priority throughout the whole process – Sophie Quire was written to be book that I wish someone had given me when I was young. Jonathan: I'm so happy that the book seemed fun to write. Was that as fun to write as it seems? What were the challenges, if any, of penning a sequel? I loved your vocabulary choices you certainly don't write down to children. ![]() It's also a treat for people who love words, and I don't just mean the wordplay you mentioned. The whole novel is filled with moments to warm a bibliophile's heart. Jules: There's a lot I liked about Sophie, but I especially love the opening, where you wax rhapsodic about "the singular pleasure of handling a well-made book," and your closing Author's Note in which you pay tribute to the voracious reader your mother was, as well as books that impacted you as a child (such as, Matilda). In the case of Sophie Quire, it was a girl mending an old book whose pages start moving slightly, like they're breathing. For Night Gardener, it was a girl waking in the middle of the night to find dry leaves in her hair. For Peter Nimble, it was a baby floating in a basket beside a raven who had just pecked out his eyes. I spend a lot of time drawing in my journal, and every once in a while I doodle something that sucks me in and makes me want to know more. Jonathan: The only thing bad about the question is that my answer is a bit muddled – because every story has a hundred starting places. Jonathan: That's the second question you've apologized for asking – knock it off! Jules: For this book and Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes-or I guess any of your novels-how do you begin? Are you first motivated, rather, by setting or character or perhaps something else? (That may be a ridiculous question.) Jonathan: Though reading wordplay aloud can be tricky! How many young Harry Potter fans completely missed out on the "mirror of erised" joke because they were listening to the audiobook? Jules: Yes, and this wordplay was one of many reasons it was an entertaining read-aloud, in particular. That's probably why I consider books like Through the Looking-Glass and The Phantom Tollbooth as major inspirations, even if the final product bears little resemblance. No-Nonsense, Uncannyon, the Dead Certain, the Last Resort: Those phrases were the foundation of the whole world. It's funny you start our conversation with wordplay, because language is an essential component of Sophie Quire. Jonathan: If you say it quickly enough, the two pronunciations sort of blend into one. Is it pronounced "uncanny-yon"? Or "un-canyon"? This isn't the world's most insightful question, but I'm dying to know how you pronounce The Uncannyon (which to those who haven't read this book is the "Great Unknown whose depths could never be plumbed" in Sophie's world). We really enjoyed it, and it was the book that defined our summer of 2014. This is fitting, since two years ago we read The Night Gardener in the summer as well. Jules: Hi, Jonathan! As I've already told you, I read Sophie Quire aloud to my girls (ages 12 and 10). I tracked down Jonathan on the heels of finishing this exceptionally good novel to chat about Sophie, storybooks, his writing, and more. This all kicks off a grand adventure for Sophie, Peter, and a whole cast of well-crafted characters in a story celebrating the written word. ![]() When Sophie is given a copy of the magical Book of Who, she becomes a target for Inquisitor Prigg, whose plan is to rid the town of nonsense, especially storybooks, on Pyre Day. Her world changes dramatically when she learns that she, an unassuming bookmender, is a Storyguard, as was her mother before her. Even if you haven’t read (but especially if you have) Jonathan Auxier’s Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes (2011), you’ll want to pick up a copy of Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard, the latest novel from Auxier, during which Peter meets feisty, brave Sophie. ![]() The lake, with its incredible properties (which can be explained by its chemical make-up: the alkalinity varies between pH 9 and pH 10.5) has preserved these creatures. I took these creatures as I found them on the shoreline, and then placed them in ‘living’ positions, bringing them back to ‘life’, as it were. The soda and salt causes the creatures to calcify, perfectly preserved, as they dry. The water has an extremely high soda and salt content, so high that it would strip the ink off my Kodak film boxes within a few seconds. I unexpectedly found the creatures – all manner of birds and bats – washed up along the shoreline of Lake Natron in Northern Tanzania. The calcified animals were found by National Geographic photographer Nick Brandt, who supposedly found the dead animals floating around in the water, or washed up on the shore. The stone that we were talking about earlier is actually a chemical process to which the animals were subjected (much like Egyptian mummification). ![]() The internet has a funny way of taking a story and transforming it into something completely fake, so before you read on, we urge you to check out this article, where the process of preservation and the ecosystem of the Natron Lake is explained. Ok, it’s not really stone, but something very similar. Lake Natron may be beautiful, but it seems that it holds a deadly secret: it turns animals that touch it into stone. You might have seen them circulating on the internet, and if you didn’t, we will share them with you. Have you ever heard about Lake Natron? It is one of the most serene lakes in all Africa, but it is also the source of some truly eerie photographs. |
